Frequently Asked Questions

If you don't see the response you are looking for here, please contact us - we're happy to help!
What do your kits contain?
Our kits are designed specifically for 72 hours of survival and contain items recommended by emergency planning authorities for survival should you need to leave your car or home quickly, including long-life water and food rations (5 year shelf-life from date of manufacture). Please click here to view our Beesafe 72 Hour Emergency Preparedness Kits, along with pricing.

Why 72 Hours?
The Canadian Government recommends that all citizens be prepared to survive in emergency situations for 72 hours.  Why 72 hours?  In emergency situations, it can take this long for emergency response teams to mobilize and respond to those who are not immediately in danger.  While most people think about earthquakes when it comes to emergency planning, there are many other situations where it is important to be prepared, such as power outages, winter storms/extreme weather, or wildfires.

Do I need to add anything to my new Beesafe kit?
Each family is different and has specific needs.  We have covered all of the survival basics, but when your kit arrives it will have a checklist with some suggestions on what you might want to add before you store it away (and hopefully never use it – well, at least until you need to replace your long-life food & water rations!).  Things to add to your kit include things like some cash & change in small bills, medications, diapers and/or formula/baby food. As well, your kit comes with a Family Emergency Plan template (also available on our website) that you should complete with your family before packing your kit away (we’ll even tell you the best place to store your kit!)

I have read that we are supposed to have at least two litres of water per person per day and food that won't spoil such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods.  How can I possibly carry all of this with me in an emergency?
It's confusing.  Two litres of water is the optimal amount for bathing, brushing teeth, cooking and drinking, and it would be nice to tuck into a can of Chicken Pasta Soup on a cold night!  But if you had to evacuate your home, carrying all of that with you would be difficult. In addition to Beesafe's "Grab & Go" style kits, we recommend having a cache of bottled water and dried and canned food in a safe place at home (i.e. your shed or garage) in case of emergency where you can stay close to home.  And remember, that water and food should be replaced annually.  Some good ideas for a stay-at-home kit include:
  • Water – at least two litres of water per person per day
  • Food that won’t spoil, such as canned food, energy bars and dried foods (replace food and water once a year)
  • Manual can-opener
  • Crank or battery-powered flashlight (and extra batteries). Replace batteries once a year.
  • Crank, battery-powered radio (and extra batteries) or Weatheradio
  • First aid kit
  • Extra keys to your car and house
  • Some cash in smaller bills, such as $10 bills and change for payphones
  • A copy of your emergency plan and contact information
  • If applicable, other items such as prescription medication, infant formula, equipment for people with disabilities, or food, water and medication for your pets or service animal (personalize according to your needs)

We do a lot of camping and already have a lot of things to put into a kit.  Can we buy some of the hard-to-find preparedness items separately to build our own kit?
Yay!  You've already started putting together a kit.  Just make sure everything is in one place and easy to grab if you need to leave home in a hurry.  If you need to add some emergency preparedness items to your kit, we do sell those separately.

How long is my kit good for?
Unless you get curious and choose to snack on your long-life food rations (which we don't really recommend - they are yummy, but they should be available should you ever need them), the only things that will need to be updated are the food & water rations, lightstick (every 5 years), and emergency plan (each year).

We are planning on adding to our family in the future - how do we get a kit that will meet our growing needs?
Congratulations!  And not to worry, you can easily add onto your kit by purchasing an individual add-on kit.  We sell add-on kits for:
  • children
  • adults
  • pets

We have a wheat/dairy/gluten sensitivity in our family. Can we order a Beesafe kit without the food rations?
For sure - just contact us with your order specifications and we'll send you an invoice for a reduced price on your kit that doesn't include the emergency food rations.

Do you sell vehicle kits?
Yes!  Please visit our For Your Vehicle page for options for your car.
